MANE DEFENSE – insect repellant

I found a great insect repellent that last even on trail rides…it is a bit late for this season, but maybe early for next year!!

It is made by Cedarcide California, called Mane Defense and it really works, almost better than my homemade spray I have always used.   It has no chemical and it cedar based, is 1% Cedar oil and 99% essence of Juniperus Virginiana (Which is Eastern Redcedar)  It is non greasy and has a great smell.  It actually repels mosquitoes, which my homemade spray doesn’t do.  The traditional insecticides smell awful and break down quickly when exposed to the environment, but the Mane Defense sells great and actually works!  It is completely natural.

The farrier is usually fighting off gnats and flies, but after I sprayed this Mane Defense, the flies never landed…so he is sold as well.  He took half of mine!

It Is the first spray I have seen keep a horse fly off ….pretty amazing stuff…I just hate I didn’t find it until after summer was gone!.

They also have a cream that you can apply to the face.  The Cedar lotion is perfect for ears , eyes and around the face….belly and legs.      It lasts and lasts….I rode for a few hours and when I got back, even through all the sweat, it still was effective.

Another product they make is Mane Defense Prill,  which is granules, made of cedar  oil 3.5% , completely biodegradable not toxic at all..  Just sprinkle some of it in the stalls, tack room, barn floor, under feed buckets, anywhere you don’t want bugs to crawl around.  The bonus is that is has a great cedar smell and has kept spiders and other crawly bugs away……!

Around our water faucet, we have a cover that has TONS of spiders in it…I sprinkled some of this in there and the next day, NO SPIDERS!!.  That sold me!!

It doesn’t kill them, it repels them and they go elsewhere looking for a place to build.
