The W-S Rescue Squad Large Animal Response Team is a newly formed organization officially established in October of 1999. A need for this type of group was first realized after the storms came through this area in May of 1998. North Carolina ranks among the top 5 areas for natural disasters in the U.S., averaging 13-15 weather related disasters in a year. In the past rescue workers trained in human rescue work have been diverted to handle animal rescue incidents when they could have been focused on human rescue efforts. This was the case during the floods following hurricane Floyd when 1000’s of farm animals were stranded and required rescue, treatment or tending to prevent mass death. With the increased growth in this area and having over 200,000 horses in the area and innumerable other large animals, the potential for accidents and disasters is inevitable. The increased population of central N.C. coupled with the current trend for people to move further out of cities creates a much greater risk of animal related incidents on and off roads. I-40 is a main thoroughfare for cattle, swine, goats, horses and all other large animals traveling through the state.
In October of 1999 this group was invited to become part of the Winston-Salem Rescue Squad Inc. Established since 1937, this squad is the oldest in N.C. and second oldest in the United States. This squad is totally a volunteer organization averaging 20-25 members. They have the ability to respond anywhere in the country if requested.
The proceeds from this horse show will go toward furthering the education of the volunteer members on the Large Animal Response Team. Equipment and supplies are necessary in setting up this type of team and of course lots of training. When we are up and running we will be under the 911 system. If anyone is interested in learning more about the W-S Rescue Squad Large Animal Response Team or becoming a volunteer, contact Sandy Mayberry at 768-1864.
